Westminster council is calling on
residents and businesses to nominate their sporting heroes for its new
Active Westminster Awards.
The awards recognise the many sporting individuals, clubs and other
organisations who make a real difference to their community through
sport and physical activity.
This could include outstanding sports coaches, future young talent,
and volunteers who go above and beyond to promote active lifestyles in
their local communities.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to an awards ceremony at
Lords Cricket Ground on 19th November and winners could walk away with a
range of prizes including sports centre membership and sports
equipment.
The 11 categories are: Physical activity, Health and wellbeing
project; Inclusive and active; Active school; Active place; Sports club;
Champion of the future; London Youth Games; Coach or community exercise
instructor; Active volunteer; Active resident and Outstanding
contribution.
Cllr Steve Summers, Westminster's cabinet member for customer
services and communities, said: "We know that there are countless
numbers of people in Westminster who are making a real difference to the
lives of others in their communities, either by promoting healthy
lifestyles or encouraging them to take part in sports across the city.
"These awards are just a small step in highlighting the important and
often essential contribution of Westminster's sporting heroes who
sometimes go unrecognised."
Westminster Council is running the Awards in partnership with NHS
Westminster.
Anyone who lives and works in Westminster can be nominated.
Nominations are open for entry until 20th September 2010 and can be
made online at
