Ever wanted to get yourself a 'Mini MOT' or improve your swimming technique? Well this weekend leisure centres and sport venues
-
Soho's Marshall Baths
across Westminster are hosting more than 200 hours of free activities
this weekend.
Swimming, trampolining, badminton, yoga, table tennis
and rowing are among the sports on offer across 11 venues, with our very own Marshall Street Leisure Centre getting involved, so no excuses all you Sohoites out there!
Visitors will be encouraged to try
new activities such as ‘Zumba’ – a Latin inspired fitness workout – to
supervised climbing sessions and archery.
They will also have the
opportunity to have a 'mini' fitness MOT at the gym, try out a number of
sports including cricket, basketball or have a chance to improve their
swimming technique.
Cllr
Steve Summers, Westminster Council’s cabinet member for community
services, said: “Whether you are trying a new sport or want to find out
what’s on offer, we would encourage our residents to take advantage of
all these free activities."Westminster's gyms and leisure facilities
provide excellent value for money, and we have some of the best
facilities in the capital. Westminster prides itself on having an
extremely high concentration and wide variety of fitness, sport and
leisure facilities within easy access of all our residents and
visitors."
Dr Helen Walters,
Director of Public Health at NHS Westminster and Westminster Council
said: "Getting active is the best thing you can do to get happier and
healthier now, and live longer into the future. Any sort of moderate
exercise has an immediate effect on beating stress and making your heart
healthier. It is important to do what you enjoy - walking, dancing,
digging, running, or jumping. The options are endless – and this weekend
is a great chance to try something new.”
The 'Active Westminster Weekend' is
being run in partnership with a range of organisations across the city
including NHS Westminster. For full listings visit www.westminster.gov.uk/activeweekend.
