A holiday to Portugal comes in many different forms, with something to suit all tastes. Whether you might be looking at an adventurous excursion exploring the spectacular mountains that range across the central belt of the country or want to spend a few hours on some of the country’s wonderful golf courses that rank amongst the best in the world, there is a Portuguese holiday that will tick all the boxes.
Perhaps a more traditional sun and sea style of relaxation offered by the swathes of magnificent unspoilt beaches along the Algarve coast is more to your liking? The distinct 'Atlantic meets Mediterranean' atmosphere is unique amongst European holiday hotspots and is a consistently popular option. Maybe you are willing to take advantage of the recent developments of the winter sports industry high in the mountains?
Whatever your choice, flights to Portugal depart from the UK from a wide range of airports and the short haul trip makes it a great contender for anyone looking for a short notice getaway. Although only a couple of hours away, the climate and atmosphere in Portugal couldn’t be more different to that back in Blighty – offering the perfect winter reprieve for sun-starved Brits.
For those worried about cost, leading travel companies such as Flybe offer great bargains when it comes to booking a flight to Portugal. It is likely to be the perfect holiday of your choice – with Portugal often voted one of the most affordable places to holiday.
Where to go?
The Algarve is probably the most well-known region of the country – which is no surprise as it has some of the finest beaches in the whole of Europe. The coastline is actually on the Atlantic Ocean but the familiar feel of the towns and resorts is due to Mediterranean influences, making it a comfortable choice for visitors already familiar with holidays in Spain, Italy or the south of France.
There really is a little bit of everything; from spectacular scenery to a wide choice of world class golf courses, from traditional fishing villages to more commercialised larger resorts. A great choice of cheap flights to this region means that the Algarve is not only the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, but is also amongst the top destinations in the whole of Europe
Albufeira is the Algarve's biggest and best-known resort and, as you would expect, it is the destination of choice for those looking for lively nightlife. This shouldn't take away from its fishing-village history though, with the cobbled streets in the Old Town providing some fantastic traditional restaurants.
Sagres is far removed, being not much more than a main road with a cobbled square at the end of it. The wonderful beach at this small resort is surrounded by red cliffs against which the breaking waves make it a favourite surfing spot.
An even quieter atmosphere can be found at Luz, where a long stretch of golden sandy beaches around a crescent bay attracts family travellers. Luz has been spared from the blight of over-development which sadly has affected much of the coastline and there are only low-level buildings nestled amongst the hills that rise up away from the beach.
