At 4.30 am this morning, Mark

Field, Conservative MP for the Cities of London and Westminster, received the news that he had

been re-elected by the people of the constituency.

The Cities of London and

Westminster has long been a Tory stronghold and it seemed that despite strong

opposition from other parties, Mark Field trounced the competition. Having

garnered 43.3% of the vote in 2005, Field received over half the votes, with a

very comfortable 52.2%, which translates to over 19,000 votes in his favour.

Labour candidate, Dave Rowntree

followed next with 8,188, giving him a total of 22.2% slice of the voter pie,

some way behind Mark Field and down a touch from 2005, when his predecessor Hywel

Lloyd received over 25% of the votes.

The results followed a very similar

order as those did in 2005, placing the Liberal Democrats, represented this

year by Naomi Smith, in at third place, giving Smith 7,574 votes and a 20.5%

share – a slight improvement from 2005 of half a percent.

In fourth place came the Green

Party, who have enjoyed greater success and popularity in this election than

before and saw Dr Derek Chase take  778

votes which is 2.1% overall. This is in contrast to the 4.2% his predecessor

took in 2005, coming in at only half the votes previously received.

The remainders of the results are

as follows:

Paul Weston

of the UK Independence Party took 664 votes,

1.8%, an increase of 0.7%

Frank Roseman of the English Democrats  took 191 votes,  0.5%, an increase of 0.5%

Dennis

Delderfield, an Independent candidate, took 98 votes, 0.3%, an increase

of 0.3%

Jack Nunn, of

the  Pirate Party UK took 90

votes, 0.2%, an increase of 0.2%

And finally, Mad Cap'n Tom, an independent candidate

with a most amusing name (!) took 84 votes,  0.2%, an increase of 0.2% also.

And there we have it! In one of

the most exciting and unpredictable election in years, the people of the Cities

of London and Westminster have voted in a very predictable way!  So are you happy with the results? Surprised

that we have another Conservative term or disappointed that another party candidate

did not pip Field to the post? Let us know what you think!
