Newly opened Azulito tequila bar hits all the right notes in Soho

I've long been a fan of Wahaca's delicious, filling, Mexican street food offerings for some time now, but I have to confess that it's the cocktails that I come here for before a night out in Soho. So imagine my delight when I caught wind of a new tequila bar opening beneath Wahaca that goes by the name of Azulito.

Azulito is the place to go for the best tequila in London!

80 agave tequilas to choose from at Azulito, Soho!

Now, I don't profess to know a great deal about tequila, other than it causes me to lose all control of my lower limbs, but with an impressive 80 varieties of 100% blue agave tequilas on sample at Azulito (meaning little blue, from the blue agave plant fermented to create tequila), it was high time I went along for a lesson…..or three.
As you head into Wahaca and descend in to the concrete bowels of the building, you get the impression that you've stumble on the set of Byker Grove, 20 years in the future, with the brightly-coloured, mismatched plastic furniture, foosball tables and graffiti-style paint job. Yet, for all its fun and informal and blithe appearance, Azulito do take their tequila very seriously. There's no place for Tijuana carwashes here, instead Azulito encourage its amigos to sip and savour the tequilas they have lovingly handpicked for your delight. Tequila is priced from as little as £3 for a 25ml shot up to a hefty £45 for a similar measure for the rarist and most sought after variety.
Azulito also serve cocktails, though all tequila based as you would imagine, they are all very different, equally tasty and all around the £7 mark, which is another nice surprise from this Soho basement gem. The classic Margarita is not to be missed, made with organic agave syrup, it is said to give a slower release of sugars to help keep things smooth.
So next time you're in Soho and feel the urge to party Mexican style, head to Azulito and follow these instructions; bag yourself the hanging basket chair, order a sangrita, down sangrita, sip tequila and repeat as necessary. And if, like me, you have trouble getting that hanging basket chair to remain still after all that tequila, do as I did and get yourself a delicious bowl of guacamole and let that tequila work its magic. Mind those stairs on the way out!
